City of Mississauga Recognizes Outstanding Employee Achievements
MISSISSAUGA, February 22, 2012 – In a ceremony held today in Council, over 130 City of Mississauga employees were honoured with internal Corporate Awards for Excellence for outstanding achievements in 2011.
“The Corporate Awards for Excellence program gives us an opportunity to celebrate the many outstanding achievements of City employees,” said Janice Baker, City Manager and CAO. “The commitment and hard work of our staff make a big impact to the success of Mississauga as a municipal leader. It gives me great pride to recognize their accomplishments in this way.”
The Corporate Awards For Excellence are presented annually, in eight different categories.
The award categories and 2011 recipients are:
1. Customer Service Award: Given to an individual or team who has consistently "gone the extra mile" to earn the respect, support and appreciation of their customers.
Award Recipients:
- Malton Parks Team (Recreation & Parks, Community Services Department)
2. Continuous Improvement Award: Given to an individual or team who has brought about a significant change through their innovation and creativity.
Award Recipients:
- Hansen Activity Timesheet - Parks (HAT-P) Mobile Solution Team (comprised of staff from various departments)
3. Leadership & Empowerment Award: Given to an individual at any level of the Corporation who through leadership and vision has inspired staff by gaining their commitment, making them feel valued and by building effective teams.
Award Recipient:
· Ken Owen, Director Facilities & Property Management, Corporate Services Department
4. Team Effectiveness Award: Given to a team that has successfully achieved superior results through group effort.
Award Recipients:
- Mississauga Celebration Square Official Opening – June 22, 2011 (comprised of staff from various departments)
5. Partnership Award: Given to employees who have engaged in a joint project or event, with an external organization, association, service group or level of government where the outcome has demonstrated mutual benefits.
Award Recipients:
- MiWay Student Ambassador Program (comprised of staff from various departments)
6. Kirk French Spirit Award: This award honours the memory of former employee Kirk French. The Spirit award is meant to recognize individuals who are able to lift the spirits of their co-workers with their positive outlook toward their job and life in general. This award is given to an individual who exemplifies a love of life, adds laughter and vitality to the workplace and enriches the lives of others.

· Lori-anne Bonham, Planning, Development & Business Services, Community Services Department
7. Brenda Sakauye Environment Award: This award honours the memory of former employee Brenda Sakauye. The award is given to an individual or team who has made an innovative or significant environmental contribution which advanced the City’s Strategic Plan ‘Living Green’ pillar for change.

- O’Connor Park Development Project Team (comprised of staff from various divisions within the Community Services Department)
8. City Manager's Award of Excellence: Presented to a team that has demonstrated outstanding qualities of excellence in their work.
Award Recipients:
· Infrastructure Stimulus Fund (ISF) and Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) Core Project Team (comprised of staff from various departments)

Peel Police - Peel Regional Police Promote Cyber Academy

The crime prevention experts at Peel Regional Police are proud to once again offer the highly successful Cyber Academy for any interested residents of Peel. The Academy is delivered over five consecutive Wednesday nights and will teach parents, educators and other professionals how to avoid the risks of identity theft, on-line luring and a host of other topics. Space is limited to forty seats only, on a first-come/first-served basis, and is free of charge.
Lectures will include:
- Computer Safety: passwords, firewalls, viruses, spam, phishing.
- Technological Crime: wireless routers, latest technological developments, emerging trends and risks.
- Child Exploitation: child pornography, on-line luring, social networking, cyberdating.
- "...at the click of a mouse..." cyber-bullying using digital mediums.
- "Unlocking the Secrets" cyber-fraud: how identities are stolen.
- "Do You Know Where Your Children Are?" can you trust the internet? How cyber-paedophiles target/identify/track young victims on-line.

Peel Police - Arrest made in Double Fatal Collision
February 14, 2012
Peel – Investigators from the Major Collision Bureau have made an arrest in a double fatal motor vehicle collision which occurred in Mississauga.
On Monday, October 24th, 2011, at approximately 3:00 p.m., a violent motor vehicle collision between a Mazda and a Jeep occurred in the intersection of Hurontario Street and the Queensway. The rear passengers in the Mazda, a 69 year old female and a 76 year old female both of Mississauga were killed instantly. The front passenger, a 66 year old female from Toronto, is still recovering from critical injuries.
On February 14, 2012, the driver of the Mazda was arrested. Jan GIEMZA, 68, of Toronto has been charged with two counts of Dangerous Driving Causing Death and one count of Dangerous Driving Causing Bodily Harm. He will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton for a bail hearing.

City of Mississauga Accepting Nominations for Phil Green Recognition Award
MISSISSAUGA, February 13, 2011 – The City of Mississauga’s Cycling Advisory Committee (MCAC) is searching for cycling enthusiasts in a call for nominations for the Phil Green Recognition Award.
The Phil Green Recognition Award is presented annually by the City of Mississauga to a resident or group of residents who have demonstrated a commitment to making cycling a greater part of the community.

City of Mississauga’s
MiWay records highest ever ridership in 2011
MISSISSAUGA, February 13, 2012 – The numbers are in and have been tallied – MiWay – the new Mississauga transit recorded its highest ever ridership achieving a 5.9 per cent increase in its 2011 ridership over 2010.
“We surpassed our growth expectations for 2011 with this 5.9 per cent increase in ridership and we are extremely proud of this accomplishment,” said Geoff Marinoff, director of Transit. “We are proud to be contributing to the City of Mississauga’s goal of being a transit-oriented city.”
Marinoff added that in 2011, MiWay carried 32.8 million revenue rides and customers boarded a MiWay bus almost 49 million times. Ridership has been on an upward trend in recent years. In 2010, there was a 5.2 per cent increase and in 2008 there was a 4.8 per cent increase.
“Our growth in 2011 is directly related to the investments in improving transit for the residents of Mississauga and we are committed to continually improving the travel experience for our customers,” Marinoff said.
Investments in Transit:
- Introduction of 43 new MiLocal (orange) fuel-efficient and fully accessible buses
- Automated next stop announcement technology installed on all MiWay buses
- PRESTO card readers installed on all MiWay buses
- Retired the last high-floor bus from service - all buses in the transit fleet are now fully accessible
- Video/audio surveillance systems installed on all MiWay buses to enhance passenger safety and security
- Introduced more frequent service, extended service hours and additional weekend service to serve the growing number of customers who travel on the Hurontario-Main Street corridor (see: miway.ca/hurontario)
- Introduced the City's first smartphone app (MiWay app) for iPhone/iPod touch devices (www.miway.ca/app) to complement the award-winning MiWay Mobile Site (m.miway.ca)
- Implemented a MiWay Student Ambassador program to engage Mississauga’s youth and to encourage transit use at Secondary Schools

MISSISSAUGA, February 10, 2012 – City of Mississauga recreation facilities will offer a variety of drop-in activities on Family Day, Monday, February 20 and MiWay will operate on a Sunday schedule.

Recreation Facilities
A special Family Day Pass will be available for $8.10 at local facilities on February 20 and can be used for multiple activities at participating indoor facilities throughout the day. A Family Day Pass is valid for up to five people; at least one person must be 16 years of age or older.

Outdoor Skating
Mississauga Celebration Square is hosting a Family Day Skate from 2 – 4 p.m. on February 20. The free skate features figure skating performances and gourmet food truck treats (for purchase).
