Go Beyond the Hour.  Win a Ride with the Mayor.

MISSISSAUGA, MAY 21, 2013The City of Mississauga is extending its participation in Earth Hour through the I Will If You Will (IWIYW) campaign by going beyond the hour and continuing to take action to protect the environment.

“I pledge to take the winner of Mississauga’s I Will If You Will challenge for a ride in my electric vehicle,” said Mayor Hazel McCallion. “I believe one of the best ways to encourage others to do their part for the environment is to set an example myself. Big and small, every action counts.”

As part of Mississauga’s IWIYW challenge, 500 residents are encouraged to register for the second phase of the Let Your Green Show (LYGS) campaign. At letyourgreenshow.ca  you can pick a water-saving action, track your neighbourhood's environmental progress and get money saving rewards. Once 500 people accept the challenge (no later than by August 31, 2013), a winner will be chosen to ride with the Mayor in her electric vehicle.

“From installing a high efficiency showerhead to simply checking a home for leaks, the actions are small steps residents can take to reduce their water use and help the environment,” said Brenda Osborne, director, Environment. “It’s about taking every day actions to live greener lives.”

CUSTOMER INFORMATION NOTICE

CUSTOMER INFORMATION NOTICE

TAKE PRECAUTIONS WHEN NEAR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT

May 13, 2013 – (MISSISSAUGA, Ontario) – April was Dig Safe month in Ontario and

today marks the beginning of Powerline Safety Week, which runs until May 19. As

utilities across the province recognize Powerline Safety Week, Enersource would like

to remind everyone about the importance of safety around

all electrical equipment.

When undertaking maintenance or home improvement projects, one potential danger

you can encounter is in making contact with electrical conductors and components,

which can be overhead or buried underground. Contact with this equipment could

cause serious or even fatal injuries.

The warmer weather leads many of us to start working on gardens, building pools or

decks, as well as a variety of tasks that require putting a shovel into the ground.

Before digging, customers and contractors are reminded to contact

Ontario One Call,

a

free 24-hour service that specializes in locating underground cables. Customers

should call

1-800-400-2255 or visit www.on1call.com at least one week before

digging.

Other potential hazards can occur long after the original work has been completed.

With trees, the dangers can become evident several years later. When planting a

tree, avoid locations near overhead and underground power lines and consider how

large the tree will be at full maturity. When trimming trees, be aware of the power

lines around you. If you find yourself near overhead wires, please call Enersource

before you proceed. Our trained experts will assess the situation to ensure that you

are fully aware of the potential hazards and will provide advice on how to proceed

safely.

Pad-mounted transformers, commonly known as green boxes are key components in

our electrical distribution system and Enersource relies on homeowners and local

businesses to keep these boxes clear of any obstructions. They require a minimum

clearance of 3 metres in front of the transformer and at least 1.5 metres on the sides

in order to gain access to the electrical components for maintenance or emergency

work.

Taking a few extra steps to ensure that your project can be performed in a safe

manner, can greatly reduce the possibility of unfortunate accidents, which could range

from minor interruptions to your service to serious personal injuries. Please remember

to always take a “Safety First” approach when around any electrical equipment.

Mississauga Shark Fin By-law Repealed

Mississauga Shark Fin By-law Repealed

MISSISSAUGA, May 10, 2013 – At this week’s City Council meeting, the City of Mississauga’s Shark Fin By-law 0268-2011 was repealed and is no longer in effect.

The repeal of the by-law follows a staff and Council review of an Ontario Superior Court decision involving a similar by-law enacted in the City of Toronto, which determined this type of by-law does not have a legitimate municipal purpose.

Council reaffirmed its concern about illegal and inhumane shark finning practices and with the potential extinction of several species of sharks as a result.

Background:

The City of Mississauga’s by-law to prohibit the possession, sale, trade, and distribution of shark fins or derivative products was approved by Council in October 2011 and came into effect on June 30, 2012.

In 2011, Council  asked staff to prepare a motion to request the federal government to enact legislation to prohibit the import of shark fins and shark fin products into Canada, and that the City of Mississauga request other municipalities to join the lobbying of the federal government to take necessary actions for a ban on shark finning.

As Canada's sixth largest city, Mississauga is home to 741,000 residents and more than 54,000 businesses, including more than 60 Fortune 500 companies with Canadian head offices or major divisional head offices. Hurontario-Main LRT Project

The City of Mississauga and the City of Brampton have a vision for a vibrant Hurontario-Main corridor from the Lakeshore in Port Credit to downtown Brampton. In 2011, the cities’ Master Plan concluded that Light Rail Transit (LRT) is the preferred form of transit along the Hurontario-Main corridor. An LRT system, providing key transportation connections to the cities, both north/south and with the GO Transit system, has been identified as a catalyst for sustainable, well-managed growth. The Hurontario-Main LRT Project is now in the Preliminary Design and Transit Project Assessment (TPAP) Phase, which includes design and technical studies supported by extensive stakeholder and public consultations.

EpiPens Available on all Mississauga Fire Trucks

EpiPens Available on all Mississauga Fire Trucks

Mississauga, May 8, 2013 – Today during City Council, Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services announced that all fire trucks operating in Mississauga will carry EpiPens and firefighters are authorized to provide assistance to anyone that requires it.

“Our firefighters are generally first on scene when there’s been a 911 call so having EpiPens available on the fire trucks makes good sense,” said Mississauga fire chief, John McDougall. “Training for our firefighters began in February and I’m pleased to say that all crews have now been trained.”

“Those suffering from an anaphylactic medical emergency used to have to wait for the ambulance to arrive,” said Debbie Bruce, co-director, Canadian Anaphylaxis Initiative. “When a person is suffering, seconds count so we are thrilled to be working with Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services and Peel Region to bring awareness to anaphylaxis with the introduction of this initiative.”

According to Bruce, during an anaphylactic reaction, an allergic reaction occurs in all parts of the body simultaneously. The reaction can be so severe that it can cause allergic shock and can result in death. Administering epinephrine immediately is key to a positive outcome.

Epinephrine must be injected immediately and the person transported to the hospital, according to Bruce. When used correctly, an EpiPen administers epinephrine which can buy the sufferer enough time to reach the nearest emergency facility for continued treatment and observation. Administering epinephrine immediately is key to a positive outcome.
