Applewood Plaza Metro Store

City staff are continuing to work with the Proponent to resolve issues prior to making recommendations to the Planning and Development Committee regarding applications for Official Plan Amendment and Rezoning to allow for the construction of a new grocery store. The proponent has advised that the future of Metro at the Applewood Plaza remains uncertain and a new lease agreement has not been reached. The proponent has asked Staff to continue to process the applications for Official Plan Amendment and Rezoning to accommodate for a new grocery store to be constructed on site, but have asked that the application for Site Plan Approval be held in abeyance until tenancy issues have been resolved.

Staff are expecting revised materials from the proponent shortly and are hopeful that the applications for Official Plan Amendment and Rezoning can be scheduled for a Planning and Development Committee meeting this spring.                                                             Westacres Pool  

As you may be aware, Westacres Pool was not scheduled for capital replacement until sometime after 2021. Getting this pool built has been our number one priority since 2010. With the support of MP Stella Amber, we received approximately one million dollars in funding for the pool through the Federal Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund in November 2012. Councillor Tovey is very pleased to announce that this morning City Council approved the additional funding required to build the new Westacres Pool. Construction is expected to start spring of this year, with completion in March 2014. We would like to thank the residents of Applewood for their kind e-mails of support and for taking the time to sign the community petition requesting the pool be built. We hope everyone will come out for the reopening of the pool in 2014.

Breaking News! Westacres Pool Receives

1 million dollar grant 

Breaking News! Westacres Pool in Applewood has been approved for a 1 million dollar grant from the Federal Governments Community Infrastructure Fund. Westacres is Mississauga's oldest pool, opening in 1962, and was the only pool not rebuilt under the ISF funding. This project has been the number one priority of the Ward 1 office this year. I would like to personally thank MP Stella Ambler for her great work and commitment to our community.

As you may be aware, the Federal Government announced back in July 2012 a grant of $49.6 Million Dollars for improvements to community infrastructure facilities in the Province of Ontario. Councillor Tovey immediately requested staff submit an application for funding of West Acres Pool. The submission deadline was Aug 24, 2012.  These types of applications require approval of Council, which does not sit over the summer months. A special meeting of Council was called in August 2012 to hear the following motion:

MOTION

(a) That the Commissioner of Community Services be authorized to submit

grant applications for the Don McLean West Acres Pool, the Streetsville

Main Street Square and the Lisgar Meadow Brook Park Pathway, in rank

order, and in accordance with the terms and conditions of the Community

Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF), and staff be directed to prepare

the 2013 Capital Budget with special status to recommended capital

projects that may receive CIIF funding.

The motion passed unanimously.

Councillor Tovey is very pleased to announce that West Acres Pool has been approved for a One Million Dollar grant from the Federal Government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund.

Ontario's Greenbelt could soon be stretching to include Mississauga's Credit River valley.

The Greenbelt program was created in 2005 to help designate a permanently protected band of green space across the province.
This is the first time the government has considered expanding the boundaries of the program, designed to slow urban sprawl, since its initial launch.
"It's going to mean many more people in the province are going to be directly connected to the Greenbelt," Erin Shapero of the Ontario Greenbelt Alliance told CBC News. "Places like Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton. Places that have said we want to grow the Greenbelt into urban areas."
Other locations being considered include Oakville's Gleorchy Conservation Area, as well as the Don and Humber river valleys in Toronto.
The provincial government is expected to make an official decision next year. 
The Greenbelt program is the largest of its kind in the world, and currently encompasses 1.8 million acres of land, including 7,000 farms and vineyards and 535,000 acres of waterways. The David Suzuki Foundation released a study in August that found that the Greenbelt helps to absorb hundreds of millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide, equivalent to the emissions of 33 million cars a year — a key tool to slowing climate change and improving air quality. The study pegs the economic value of the Greenbelt as a carbon storehouse at $2.4 billion a year.

Youth Arrested for Graffiti

Mississauga – On Monday, November 13, 2012, the 12 Division Neighbourhood Policing Unit culminated an investigation with the arrest of a young person for numerous property related offences.

On May 31, 2012, police initiated an investigation into reports of graffiti in the Lakeshore area of Mississauga, preparing Production Orders and Search Warrants which resulted in the arrest of a youth from the area.

Four separate victims have been identified as The City of Mississauga, Bell Canada, Enersource and Rogers.

Four counts of Mischief Under $5000.00 have been laid against the youth, who cannot be named as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act. These charges encompass 35 acts of graffiti.

The investigation is continuing and investigators anticipate further arrests.

What's Happening at Queensway and Dixie Road

The Region of Peel is making improvements on Queensway and Dixie Road.  During the current phase, they are installing temporary traffic signals and relocating various utility cables to the newly installed hydro poles along Dixie Road.  The Region is working with the contractor to minimize traffic interruption by ensuring two lanes of traffic in each direction, along with all turning lanes are maintained during the peak hours.
